Our Instructional Model

Our Instructional Model

The Trellis School incorporates the principles of applied behavior analysis (ABA), with a focus on B.F. Skinner’s analysis of verbal behavior (VB). The program captures a learner’s motivation in order to teach and reinforce new skills. The Verbal Behavior Milestones Assessment and Placement Program (VB-MAPP), the Assessment of Basic Language and Learning Skills-Revised (ABLLS-R), Essential for Living and/or The Assessment of Functional Living Skills (AFLS) are used as curriculum and skills tracking guides, along with the Maryland College and Career Readiness Standards (MCCRS).

We continually monitor progress and the mastery of goals and targets of our students by collecting data daily. Behavior Intervention Plans (BIP) are developed following a Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA) to target specific learner needs, when warranted.

Parent & Caregiver Involvement

Trellis stresses open communication with families and invites parents and caregivers to come in often throughout the year to discuss progress. Team meetings with parental and caregiver participation are held annually, and parents and caregivers receive periodic progress reports. Additionally, administrators, teachers, and other staff are always available to discuss current goals and support the generalization (or transfer) of skills across school and home environments.
